Our Staff

Sherry Arey

Executive Director

Sherry is a native of Basye in Shenandoah County.  She graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School, Bridgewater College (Bachelor's degree in elementary education), and James Madison University (Master's degree in reading and an endorsement in administration).  She began her teaching career as a classroom teacher and retired as principal of W. W. Robinson Elementary School after 31 years in the Shenandoah County school system.  She is a member of Wakemans Grove Church of the Brethren (one of our host churches).  Her experience working with children in need while serving in public education and her heart and passion for people make her well suited for this position. She knows a lot of people in the community, and she helped a lot of students at W. W. Robinson.  Sherry's husband, Barry, is also retired from Shenandoah County Public Schools and helps out around Family Promise on occasion.

Rick Kessler

Van Driver

Rick and his wife, Sharon, moved to the Shenandoah Valley from Hampton, Virginia several years ago; they attend Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church (one of our support churches).  Rick served in the U.S. Air Force and owned his own towing business in Hampton.  Rick was the first staff member hired by our executive director in January 2016.  Sharon volunteers at the Family Center when needed and both have volunteered at their sister church (St. John’s UMC in Edinburg) when it is their turn to host families. Rick feels that “it’s rewarding to focus on a community mission – because you can see it grow”.  In his spare time Rick enjoys spending time on his farm, where he raises bees; and he also volunteers with Charterhouse School in Edinburg.  He enjoys his work, the children love him, and he is very understanding of the transitional upset that many of our guests are going through.

Diane Pence

Administrative Assistant

Diane grew up in Northern Virginia but lived for many years in Frederick County, Virginia where she worked for Valley Health for 27 years.  She started her career with Valley Health as a part-time pathology transcriptionist and retired as a system administrator.  Diane first volunteered with Family Promise through her church, Antioch Church of the Brethren (one of our host churches), where she prepared and served meals and acted as an overnight host; she also volunteered at the Family Center.   She was hired in June 2016 and feels that this is a great way to give back to the community.  She and her husband, Guy, enjoy life on their farm but also love to travel and spend time with family.  She is an avid genealogist and history enthusiast.  She also volunteers with the Shenandoah County Historical Society and likes to spend time working in her flower beds.

Diane Wittreich

Case Manager

Diane spent part of her childhood in Northern Virginia but later moved to Frederick County, Virginia, where she graduated from James Wood High School.  She was employed by Valley Health in Behavioral Health Services for 25 years.  In recent years she has worked in the field of geriatric services.  Diane has a Bachelor's degree from American Public University in sociology and a minor in family studies.  In February 2017, Diane joined the staff at Family Promise of Shenandoah County.  She has been busy expanding our case management program and working with our guest families.  She is a very busy lady since she also has her own business as a certified health coach.  She loves spending time with her twin college-aged sons and extended family, gardening and reading.
